We are seeking a highly skilled Fundraising Manager to lead CARAD to its next phase of attaining a sustainable funding model. Through the development and implementation of key strategies, you will drive strategic and operational outcomes to diversify funding streams.
The Fundraising Manager will work closely with the General Manager and the Management Committee’s (i.e. Board) Fundraising Sub-Committee to achieve key objectives.
Ideally 5+ years’ experience in fundraising in the not-for-profit sector
Experience in planning, developing and implementing fundraising strategies
Experience working with CaLD clients and colleagues, including asylum seekers, refugees and detainees is desirable
Proven track record in building relationships and partnerships with individuals, networks and organisations

As you may have already seen on our socials, it is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of FareGo, CARAD's beloved food catering social enterprise.
After much consideration, the difficult decision was made earlier this year to cease operations at the end of March 2024.
Since its inception, FareGo has been more than just a catering service; it has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for asylum seekers in our community. Through FareGo, we have provided invaluable training, employment, and empowerment to individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. We are immensely proud of the impact FareGo has had, not only in serving delicious meals but also in fostering a sense of belonging, purpose and community.
Despite our best efforts, we must acknowledge the challenges that FareGo faces in the current economic climate. The decision to close FareGo was not made lightly, but we believe it is the most responsible course of action to ensure the sustainability and continued success of CARAD's mission.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported FareGo over the years. Whether you were a loyal customer of the catering service, a student buying a meal at one of the FareGo canteens, or someone who enjoyed the food served out of the food truck, your contributions have been invaluable in making FareGo a place where people eat, share, connect and empower.
It is with mixed emotions that I announce the resignation of Michael van Koesveld from the position of Chairperson. Michael’s skills, experience and commitment have been instrumental in guiding CARAD’s vision and objectives since he took up the role in 2021.
Michael has made the decision to step down from his position for family-related reasons, and this has been supported by other members of the Management Committee. Fortunately for us, Michael will be staying on as a member of the Management Committee
I am pleased to share that Rosemary Hudson Miller will be stepping into the role of Chairperson, effective immediately. Rosemary forms part of CARAD’s DNA, having been part of establishing what eventually became CARAD in 2000. She has been an integral part of our team, demonstrating a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
In light of Rosemary stepping up as Chairperson, it brings me great pleasure to introduce Bronwyn Grieve as the newly appointed Vice Chairperson of CARAD. Bronwyn has been a dedicated member of the Management Committee since 2022, and her insights and commitment will undoubtedly enhance our endeavours further.
This transition comes at a pivotal moment for CARAD as we continue our mission to provide invaluable support and assistance to asylum seekers, refugees and detainees. Under the guidance of Rosemary and Bronwyn, we are confident in our ability to navigate whatever challenges come our way and further our impact on the lives of our clients.
We express our sincere gratitude to Michael for his unwavering dedication and invaluable contribution during his tenure as Chairperson.
Please join us in welcoming Rosemary and Bronwyn in their new roles. Both bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm that will undoubtedly steer CARAD towards continued success.

Make CARAD your reason to run!
This year’s HBF Run for a Reason will be held on Sunday 21 May. Run or walk the 4km, 12km, or half marathon route while raising money for refugees, people seeking asylum and immigration detainees.

CARAD, in partnership with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Australian Red Cross and the Department of Heath WA is running free disaster resilience training.
The Disaster Resilience Project is an educational program that helps asylum seeker and refugee communities develop their knowledge, skills and awareness about disasters and emergencies that can affect the Australian community.
This training will be run by experts in the field who have years of experience in disaster response. Participants will learn about disasters, how to identify potential hazards, create an effective emergency response plan, and take swift and effective action when disaster strikes.
The training is accessible and practical for everyone regardless of their age, gender, background, and their knowledge of English. Participants are encouraged to attend two sessions, and can attend either in person or online.
We are able to offer this lifesaving training to the community thanks to the generous support of the Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI).

The Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) has today welcomed the long-anticipated decision by the Albanese Government to honour their election commitment to allow access to Permanent Visas to almost 20,000 refugees whose lives have been left in limbo for more than a decade.
CARAD General Manager Alison Xamon said refugees who have been living on temporary protection visas now have an opportunity to finally gain some stability in their lives.
“These are people who for years have been working, paying taxes, and contributing within the Australian community,” she said.
“But the precariousness of temporary protection has meant that these same people, all of whom have been found to be genuine refugees, have not been able to take on all job opportunities, not been able to study, or get a mortgage, or access essential services such as the NDIS.
“But worst of all, these are people living in our community who have not been able to be reunited with family, with many people disconnected from children, spouses and parents still living overseas. Tragically, in the time that people have been left on temporary protection, some of these family members have been killed overseas. It has been devastating.”
“Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction towards meeting our international humanitarian obligations. It is also essential that we now find a way to address the injustice of those refugees who were negatively affected by the so-called “fast-track” system. But for this deeply flawed process today’s announcement would have been good for these people as well. We hope a solution to this injustice can be found soon.”
CARAD is a not-for-profit organisation which for more than 20 years has been providing emergency relief, casework and supports for refugees, people seeking asylum, and those asylum seekers left languishing in our immigration detention centres.
CARAD is the provider of last resort, providing the means to survive for people who are otherwise unable to receive any other supports whilst their claims for asylum are being assessed.
“The Federal Government’s announcement today will change lives for nearly thousands of refugees and people seeking asylum in WA, and CARAD recognises the Albanese Government for being the first to address this blatantly wrong process,” Ms Xamon said.
“While the refugees affected by this decision have been living safe here in WA from war, they have not been safe from the fear of not being able to build a life for themselves and their children and they can now finally do that.
“The people will now be able to get a job and apply for social safety nets that will provide the dignity and respect their deserve.”
